Snow Sports

Home to some of the world’s top Swiss winter sport champions and with up to 15 metres of snow falling each year, Villars has an enormous variety of snow sports on offer:


Whether it’s gentle family skiing, challenging off-piste, downhill slalom, fast piste carving or deep powder skiing that you want, Villars has everything to offer for the discerning skier or snowboarder. There are over 120km of ski pistes for all ages and abilities enhanced by amazing year-round glacier skiing on the 3000 metre glacier at ‘Les Diablarets’ that links with Villars.  Villars boasts one of the biggest ski schools in Switzerland and instruction is excellent.

Snow Shoeing

Snow shoeing is very popular in Villars and a great alternative for those that do not ski.  It can be enjoyed by young and old and there are no barriers to entry.  Equipment can be hired from the local sports shops and you can set off on your own, in a group or with a guide.

Cross Country Skiing

50km of tracks and trails criss-cross through stunning mountain scenery throughout the Villars region.  This is a great sport for those that enjoy the silent natural beauty of the mountains. Equipment can be hired in Villars and the local mountain guides can accompany if required.

Ski Touring

With skins on your skis you can set off to conquer the snow covered peaks and discover untouched areas with breathtaking scenery.  Equipment can be hired in Villars and the local mountain guides can accompany you on this wonderful backcountry skiing experience.

Tobogganing / Sledging

For sledging enthusiasts there are some great runs not to miss.  A 2km run from ‘Col de Soud’ down to Villars centre (take the train up) is fabulous.  For families with you children the ‘telebob’ at the ‘Refuge de Frience’ in Alpe des Chaux nearby is vey popular  and a lovely way for families to spend the afternoon. Children can hook their sledges onto a pulley system so you can enjoy a drink in the 'Refuge' itself.

Ice Skating

The huge covered ice rink at the 'Patinoire' in Villars is open all year round and is only 5 minutes walk from Chalet Balthazar. Ice skates can be hired and private figure skating lessons can be arranged too. 

Villars boasts a successful ice hockey team who train regularly on the ice.  An evening watching the 1st Team battling out one of their seasonal matches will get the adrenalin pumping.  These matches pull in a lively crowd and a buzzing bar!

During the winter months there is also an open-air ice rink at Barbelouse which is very popular with smaller children.

Day Excursions from Villars

There is such a vast choice of exciting day trips / excursions to take when staying in Villars depending on how adventurous you are feeling. Here are a few ideas to whet your appetite.

  • Jungfraujoch - the 'top' of Europe and Europe's highest altitude railway station
  • Matterhorn - the most recognized mountain in the Swiss Alps
  • Chamonix - one of the most famous mountain villages at the base of Mont Blanc with some excellent skiing opportunities including the famous Vallee Blanche and the 'Haute Route'. 1 hr 20 minutes drive from Villars.
  • Verbier - ski the 'Mont Fort' and 'Tortin'. Only 1 hrs drive away to the telecabine at 'La Chable'
  • Geneva - a small international metropolis with great shopping and sights on the lake.
  • Glacier 3000 - year round skiing and only 50 minutes drive or ski away!
  • Servion Zoo - open all year round.
  • The Alpine Marecottes Zoo - see Chamonix, ibex, lynx, bears and eagles.
  • Berne - the country's capital city with stunning medieval architecture.
